OSHA Q & A

Below are safety questions specifically focused on OSHA related topics that area construction firms have asked the Builders Association. Reviewing these questions and answers can help make you familiar with potentially problematic safety issues on your jobsites. That knowledge can help you avoid similar problems before they occur. John Maronic, Compliance Assistance Specialist at OSHA, has answered these questions.

Q: What forms are OSHA currently using for jobsite safety audits?

A: OSHA does not use any forms for that. Some people have sheets they put together for their own personal use, but there is nothing that OSHA formally has out there to perform safety audits.

Q: What is the OSHA standard for taping of extension cords when the outer casing is broken?

A: You cannot do it. Section 1926.416(e)(1) of the OSHA standard states “Worn or frayed electrical cables shall not be used.” There is an interpretation letter from December 1998, which states that tape may not be used to repair significant damage to cord jackets.

Q: Is there a regulation stating that a sign should be placed on a vehicle showing that it has a fire extinguisher and first aid kit?

A: OSHA does not have anything that addresses that. If it is for an ambulance or pick-up truck that a company uses, that would be a DOT (Department of Transportation) requirement. OSHA has nothing in its standards for this situation.
