Schumacher, Awards Put Focus On Safety

While a number of people are talking to construction company executives about economics during this slowdown, not all of them have worked safety into the equation - specifically, how going the extra mile to keep workers safe could save the industry money.

John Schumacher (right) of Assurance Safety Consulting spoke to over 100 industry firm representatives about that very topic during his keynote speech at the Builders Association's Spring Meeting at the Hyatt Rosemont Wednesday, May 27. Schumacher outlined the economics of a safety program and underscored what companies could do to make themselves both safer and more profitable.

Members also heard from OSHA Regional Director Diane Turek about current and future initiatives. Safety Committee Chair Paul Flentge of Pepper Construction Company presented the Builders Association's Safety Awards, including Best of Class winners:

Bob Smith of The Levy Company accepted an award for his accomplishments during 10 years at Chair of the Safety Committee. He thanked the companies in the room for being among those dedicated to safety and stressed the need for a continued focus on mentoring companies who want to enhance their safety programs.
